What is Wi-Fi
? Wireless Fidelity or
Wi-Fi Wireless Fidelity is an emerging
standard for wireless connectivity using 802.11. Long Island Wireless uses
the more advanced standard 802.11b for the Fire Island Network. Anyone can
use a wireless enabled laptop, computer, PDA or any internet appliance to
scan for LIW's network on Fire Island. There are cell sites located in
many towns on Fire Island including Kismet, Saltair, Robins Rest, Ocean
Beach, Ocean Bay Park, and The Pines. Take a look at our network map
for cell locations. Scan for the FIWISP network and with
the appropriate network configuration (Infrastructure)and you'll be
on-line at high speed. You must be a subscriber to use the
FIWISP network provided by Long Island Wireless. Please see Rates &
Plans. 802.11b & What You
Need Your laptop, computer, and/or PDA must
be configured with an 802.11b card. You can use any standard 802.11b Wi-Fi
card, but we recommend the Orinocio Silver card, since it has the ability
to support an external high gain antenna. If you have a card and are
within close range of one of our cells, you may have a good signal and the
Wi-Fi card is all you need. If you are further away, we offer our CPE (customer
premesis equipment) and optional high-gain antennas, which may allow
you to connect to our network. These antennas work with the recommended
Orinocio Silver Card and many other products. See our equipment section
for pictures, more information or to purchase equipment with
or without installation. |
